Boric acid is white in colour and is available in both powdered and crystallised solid forms. So far as acids go, it is relatively weak. It is less reactive than other acids such as sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid. This makes it more suitable for applications such as being used as an antiseptic or an insecticide; Boric Acid is known to kill a range of creepy crawlies, yet the same quantities are relatively harmless to humans, although great care should be taken never to ingest the substance. For analytical purposes, boric acid has a number of uses. It can be used to create buffer solutions, which in turn can be used to control and measure pH levels. It also has slightly more unusual uses. For example, when boric acid is dissolved in ethyl alcohol, also known as methanol (a liquid form of methane), then set alight, a green flame appears. This is very popular amongst fire prop enthusiasts, such as poi and staff spinners.

At ReAgent, we supply a number of grades of Boric Acid. We also supply many other acids, buffer solutions and methanol. Please note, that although Boric Acid is relatively weak, not to mention odourless too, it should still be handled with care – please consult the Material Safety Data Sheet for further information. If you would like further information on the types of Boric Acid ReAgent can supply please contact us using the form below.
