Conductivity Standards from ReAgent are accurately standardized and labelled with the determined value. They are traceable to N.I.S.T. standard reference materials. Our solutions are supplied in HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) bottles and are commonly used for calibrating conductivity meters. The solutions are clear and colorless in appearance.

Conductivity Standards are used to measure impurities in water. This is done by passing an electrical current through water, the strength of which determines the level of impurities. Water with high levels of impurities will conduct a stronger current than water with very low impurity levels. Conductivity readings are given in siemens per cm or microsiemens per cm. Microsiemens are one millionth the strength of siemens. Whilst conductivity is measured in siemens, at the opposite end of the scale, resistance is measured in ohms. Outside of the chemical industry, more people are familiar with measuring ohms than siemens.

Water without any impurities whatsoever will have a conductivity reading of zero. However in practice under regular conditions, this is unachievable because once water is exposed to the atmosphere (like when a lid is removed from a container) the water will instantly start to absorb matter from the air. Don’t let this mislead you though – we supply water which can be used for pharmaceutical applications which has a conductivity reading of below 5.1 microsiemens per cm, and is often well below this. Although technically there are some dissolved solids in the water, this only accounts for about 3 parts in every million!
