EDTA is used in a wide range of applications including the production of buffer solutions, standard solutions, cleaning solutions, etching solutions, as an additive, an antiseptic, in water testing and as a curing agent.  EDTA, which is sometimes referred to as tetra sodium edta, can dissolve many metals.  The amount of metal dissolved depends on the strength of the EDTA solution you are using, so you can infer from the strength of the EDTA solution how much metal you had to begin with.

In a pure form, EDTA is classified as Hazardous or Irritant.  However, more dilute solutions are less hazardous, which is one of the most appealing qualities of the substance – in a solution it can dissolve metal, yet it is relatively non-hazardous and easy to handle compared to other substances which dissolve metals, like strong acids, for example.  It is still important to handle EDTA properly, using all relevant PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and consulting the Material Safety Data Sheet.
