Gold Test Kit

Did You Know?

Our VeriGold Gold Test Kits test for Gold, but can also identify Sterling Silver, Brass, Cupro-Nickel Alloys, Platinum and Palladium.

Using VeriGold Dropper Bottles

It is advisable to ensure that you are carrying out your gold testing in a safe area as the acid contained in the dropper bottles will be likely to cause damage to work surfaces.  Take great care not to allow the acid to come into contact with eyes or skin.  Please read through the Material Safety Data provided, to ensure safe use of your gold test kit.

When testing the metal, you must first make a small groove in the surface of the gold.  This is to ensure that you penetrate any plating which has been applied to the surface (if it is in fact plated metal).  Ideally you should do this to an area of the jewellery where the scoring will not easily be seen.

Hold bottle upside down, slightly above the item to be tested.  Gently squeeze the sides of the dropper bottle until a single drop of acid appears.  As soon as the acid begins to drop, release the pressure so that you can control the rate at which the acid is dispensed.  When acid makes contact with the surface of the jewellery, make a note to any reaction / colour changes when carrying out the test.  Use the information listed below to check this information against.

9 Carat Gold Test:

  • 9 carat gold will stain to a light brownish colour, this may alter over time however
  • Cupro-Nickel and Copper alloys will turn Grey / Green in colour, and will froth slightly
  • 14 carat or higher purities will not be affected
  • 950 Palladium will have a slow reaction, with a light brownish colour
  • Sterling Silver shows a grey, creamy liquid. Lower grades will show some green also.
14 – 15 Carat Gold Test:
  • 14 – 15 carat gold will stain straight away, and become a brownish colour
  • 9 carat gold will turn brown immediately, and then a Grey / Green sheen will appear
  • Has no affect on 18 carat gold. Not immediately, but may show some change after a period of time
  • Brass and Cupro-Nickel alloys, will all cause an immediate foaming effect
18 – 24 Carat Gold Test:
  • A slow reaction will occur on 18 – 24 carat gold, yellow in colour. This will be noticeably slower on fine gold
  • 14 – 15 carat gold will cause a fairly quick reaction. Will create brown bubbles, then turning blackish colour
  • 9 carat gold will cause a slow reaction, with small brown bubbles
  • 950 Palladium will cause a reaction that turns from yellow to dark amber
  • 950 Platinum will not be effected (leave for 2 minutes to ensure no reaction)
  • Brass and Copper alloys will take a long time to react with this bottle
  • Stainless Steel reacts the same way as 18 carat white / yellow gold. Check this with a magnet to see if any affect. If the metal is magnetic, it will contain ferrous metals, and is therefore steel rather than gold.
