Potassium hydroxide (KOH) is a very caustic, extremely alkaline substance. It is readily soluble in water, which makes it a popular laboratory chemical, as it can be used in many laboratory experiments, not to mention for a wide range of other applications also. When it is dissolved in water, potassium hydroxide gives out a good amount of heat. A chemical reaction which emits heat is known as an exothermic reaction. Potassium Hydroxide in its pure form is a hazardous substance and should therefore only be handled by qualified and competent persons. Although some of the weaker concentrations are not as hazardous, they should still only be handled by suitable individuals.

Potassium hydroxide has many uses. Being such a strong alkaline, it is used for adjusting pH values and titrations. It is also used in the manufacture of soaps, particularly in the manufacture of softer soaps. The textiles industry and other trades use large quantities of potassium hydroxide.

An alternate name for potassium hydroxide is caustic potash. It has many similar qualities to sodium hydroxide, which is another very strong base. Similarly to potassium hydroxide also being known as caustic potash, sodium hydroxide is also known as caustic soda.
