Silver Nitrate is a salt. It is widely used within laboratories, industrially and in common every day products. Applications include testing for chloride, in the production of pharmaceuticals and as an antiseptic. Because Silver Nitrate turns black when put on glass, is also used to coat the back of mirrors – if you have ever broken a mirror, you will probably know that mirrors are black on the other side of the glass. This is because of the coating of silver.
Silver Nitrate in pure form is hazardous – corrosive and dangerous to the environment. Also, just as Silver Nitrate turns black when applied to glass, it also stains skin. In a dilute solution Silver Nitrate does not warrant hazardous warning symbols, however it should still be treated with care. Whether you purchase the solid or solutions from ReAgent, customers should consult the relevant Material Safety Data Sheets for handling and storage information.
