Applications for Silver Nitrate include testing for chloride, in the production of pharmaceuticals and as an antiseptic. Because Silver Nitrate turns black when put on glass, is also used to coat the back of mirrors – if you have ever broken a mirror, you will probably know that mirrors are black on the other side of the glass. This is because of the coating of silver.

Silver Nitrate in pure form is hazardous, corrosive and dangerous to the environment. It is important that the product is handled by responsible persons wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves, eye protection, protective clothing and safety boots or shoes.  Also, just as Silver Nitrate turns black when applied to glass, it also stains skin.
