Fabric Coatings for Revolutionary Airbags
Chemical coatings are used on fabrics to achieve many different characteristics. Coated fabrics are used in a huge range of industries, including aerospace, geotextile and HVAC applications. At ReAgent, we manufacture chemical coatings for the automotive industry.
ReAgent manufactures the fabric coatings for one of the biggest market leaders in automotive safety. This blue chip automotive company supplies specialist airbags that save up to 25,000 lives every year.
The airbags are made by weaving together raw materials before coating the product with a bespoke chemical blend that replaces the traditional silicone-based airbag coatings. There are several benefits to this kind of fabric coating:
- It keeps all the gases inside the airbag
- This keeps the airbag inflated for longer
- It is of a lower coat weight than silicone
- It is water-based, making it more user-friendly

There are many chemical coatings that use polyurethane. A high-resistance, flexible compound that can be used in a variety of industries, polyurethane is a polymer comprised of organic units and carbamate links. Polyurethane is also very resilient, can be applied to many different substrates and can be altered to achieve desired characteristics, e.g. hydrophobicity
ReAgent works with a chemical giant to help repack their polyurethane resin bound system known as Elastopave®. This innovative formulation is mixed with aggregate to create a unique paving solution that can be used on car parks, pool sides, stone carpets and even factory floors.
Elastopave® is slowly revolutionising infrastructure all around the world by:
- Providing a highly durable alternative to tarmac or asphalt
- Being light-fast and UV stable so that it won’t degrade over time
- Being manufactured to a 1K polymer system instead of a 2K one
- Being water-permeable, allowing water to migrate through it instead of gather on top of it
When used in chemical coatings or resin bound systems, polyurethane formulations provide many advantages in the form of product longevity, efficiency gains and overall cost reductions.
Glass Coatings for Medical Training
Chemical coatings are often added to glass products to protect them from damage. Polyurethane makes another appearance here in the form of dispersions, which are used on the glass because of their scratch-resistant and shatter-resistant properties. This is particularly useful in laboratories where glass containers are often used for storage.

ReAgent works with a specialist paving company to create a bespoke acrylic coating that not only enhances the appearance of outdoor patios but also protects them against algae, weeds and oil stains.
In the moulded parts industry, moulds are used to shape a variety of dynamic seals. The current method of manufacture is very inefficient; with moulds having to be continually washed and replaced, this industry sector experiences massive efficiency losses.
But the SoftSlide Project is tackling this issue by developing a semi-permanent mould release coating known as Sol-Gel. This is an innovative formulation that will be applied to moulds in order to:
- Reduce surface tension
- Maximise release properties
- Improve texture transfer to the seal
- Prevent them from bonding to moulded seal surfaces
- Improve the overall longevity and durability of the moulds
- Increase the number of cycles a mould can go through before cleaning or replacement
The SoftSlide Project is a European consortium dedicated to bringing about a new dynamic seal generation, and ReAgent is partners with it. Our role is to scale-up the production of Sol-Gel coatings, and we are currently in the process of gearing up to 100L batch sizes.
