Also known as titriometry, titrations are a common laboratory procedure in chemical analysis. This process is used to determine an unknown concentration in a certain volume of sample. As volumes are important in this analysis, the process can also be called volumetric analysis.
Types of titrations
There are many different types of titrations:
- Acid-base reaction: this reaction relies on the neutralisation between an acid and a base. Typically, a pH indicator is also used to indicate the moment when pH changes by colour changes.
- Redox titration: these reactions rely on a reduction-oxidation reaction between a reducing agent and an oxidising agent. To determine the endpoint of the reaction, a potentiometer or a redox indicator are used.
- Gas phase titration: These include titrations done in the gas phase, to determine reactive species by reaction in the presence of excessive amounts of other gas as a titrant.
- Complexometric titration: These titrations depend on the formation of a complex between the compound to analyse and the titrant. Examples include Eriochrome Black T for the analysis of magnesium and calcium and EDTA, a chelating agent used to titrate metal ions.
- Zeta potential titration: This type of titrations are determined by the zeta potential, rather than an indicator and is commonly used in heterogeneous systems, including colloids. This approach can be used, for example, to determine the best dose for stabilisation or flocculation.
