Ammonia and Biology

This compound is an essential source of nitrogen for all living organisms, needed as the building block for amino acids and proteins.

Although it’s very common in the atmosphere, most animals and plants cannot use nitrogen directly, and the element needs to be absorbed in a different manner – most commonly as part of a compound, of which ammonia is an example.

The only exception is organisms capable of nitrogen fixation, by converting atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia by enzymes called nitrogenases.

Under normal circumstances, ammonia is metabolised in the body either to be excreted in the urine or incorporated in amino acids. Most reactions involving this compound occur in the liver, as part of the urea cycle. As a consequence, liver conditions may lead to abnormally high levels of ammonia in the blood – called hyperammonemia – potentially causing liver failure and hepatic coma.

Excretion is done via the urine. In mammals and amphibians, ammonia needs to be converted to less toxic compounds, such as urea, which can be stored safely for a while.

Fish and invertebrates have developed an alternative method, involving immediate excretion of ammonia without any conversion; while birds and reptiles can convert ammonia to uric acid, which is solid and can be excreted with no water loss.
