About Ammonium Hydroxide

Ammonium hydroxide is a solution of ammonia dissolved in water. It can also be referred to as aqueous ammonia or ammonia water. It’s a colourless liquid with an easily recognised pungent and suffocating smell.

Some reactions with ammonium hydroxide can be extremely exothermic, in particular with sulphuric acid or other strong mineral acids. In addition, with volatile acids, ammonium hydroxide solutions can release ammonia as a gas.

How does Specific Gravity Change?

In ammonium hydroxide solutions, the specific gravity is dependent on the concentration of ammonia dissolved in water and its temperature.

For example, at 25°C and in a 10% solution, the specific gravity is 0.957. If the temperature drops to 20°C, the specific gravity may range from 0.99 in a 1% solution down to 0.89 in a 33% solution.
