Chemical and Physical Properties

Barium chloride forms white odourless crystals with a bitter salty taste, soluble in water and methanol, but insoluble in ethanol and acetone. Its boiling point is 1560°C and melting point is 961°C.

Uses and Applications

As an inexpensive soluble salt, barium chloride has many different applications, including:

  • Commonly used as a test to detect the presence of sulphate, as it produces a precipitate of barium sulphate (BaSO4).
  • Used in industrial settings in the purification of brine in caustic chlorine plants
  • Used in case hardening steel
  • Used in the manufacture of certain pigments
  • Used in the synthesis of barium salts
  • Used in fireworks to give a green colouration
  • Used in the treatment of impaction in horses. This is usually seen as a last resort as it carries a high risk of fatal cardiac arrest


Similar to other water-soluble barium salts, barium chloride can be extremely toxic. In cases of ingestion, magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) or sodium sulphate (NaSO4) can be used as antidotes as they react with BaCl2 to form insoluble barium sulphate (BaSO4). This compound is also toxic, but its detrimental effects can be more easily controlled due to its insolubility.
