What is Battery Acid?

In theory, battery acid can refer to any acidic solution used in a chemical battery. Traditionally, this term is used to describe a colourless and odourless solution containing sulphuric acid. This solution is commonly used in lead-acid batteries for motorised vehicles, such as a car.

At ReAgent, we supply a solution containing sulphuric acid (H2SO4) dissolved in water with a specific gravity at 20⁰C of 1.25-1.26 kg/L and a highly acidic pH (less than one).

Is Battery Acid Dangerous?

Battery acid must always be handled with great care as it may cause severe burns to skin, throat and eyes. Even vapours may cause damage to the respiratory system.

In addition, sulphuric acid present in battery acid is highly corrosive in particular with plastic, rubber or metal surfaces and it reacts violently with alkalis. Products must only be used when wearing suitable protective equipment in a well-ventilated area.

What Kind of Batteries need Battery Acid?

Lead-based batteries were invented by physicist Gaston Plante in 1859. Their low cost and ability to produce high surge currents made them very popular with motorists. Even today, these batteries continue to be used and “refuse” to be replaced with more modern versions, which is a testament to their quality.

Today, they are widely used not only in cars but also as stand-alone systems and backup supplies in hospitals and schools where high availability is needed.
