The BLOODHOUND SSC Project is challenging the World Land Speed Record with its jet-powered SuperSonic car. The team have already hit one milestone – but that’s nothing compared to what they have in store for this year.
What is the BLOODHOUND Project?
In case you haven’t heard, the BLOODHOUND Project is a high-technology plan to create a car that will break the 1,000mph barrier. Based in the UK, the project has several objectives. One of these is to bring science, technology, and engineering together in an exciting endeavour that will inspire the younger generation.
BLOODHOUND will inspire the next generation by using science to build a car that not only travels faster than the speed of sound, but also travels over 1,000 mph. ReAgent proudly supply the project with IBCs of deionised water, which are used to safely test the car’s engine without fear of corrosion. We also supply hydrogen peroxide to the project, which is used for the passivation and conditioning of materials for the car.
Since its inception in 2008, the team who comprise the BLOODHOUND Project have dedicated themselves to this ground-breaking project, and have put years of hard work into creating the car that makes Formula 1s look like Ford Fiestas. After nearly a decade, their dream is finally being realised as they begin their test runs.
Newquay Aerohub 2017
In Summer last year, we wrote a blog about the Project’s upcoming event at Cornwall Airport Newquay. In October 2017, the BLOODHOUND Project carried out their first ever test run of the SuperSonic car at Newquay Aerohub. That day, the world witnessed the car achieve 200mph. This was the first milestone on their journey to breaking the land speed record – and they’re not stopping any time soon.
BLOODHOUND Will Reach 500mph This Year
2018 is bringing exciting things to the team at BLOODHOUND as, this autumn, they set their sights on the 12 mile track in Hakskeen Pan, South Africa. Located in the Northern Cape, this is where the BLOODHOUND Project will be targeting their next milestone: 500mph, which is half-way to breaking the barrier.
500mph will be one of the riskiest speeds for the car. It is between 400-500mph that the car’s stability will no longer be dictated by its contact with the ground. Instead, it will rely on aerodynamics. As the car reaches this crucial threshold, the grip from the wheels will decrease faster than it takes the aerodynamic forces to build up. This means that the car will be at its least stable.
Well, no one said breaking the World Land Speed Record was going to be smooth sailing, right?
Aircraft Grade Aluminium Wheels
Autumn 2018 will be first time that the SuperSonic car’s solid aluminium wheels will be showcased and tested. These are 35” units with V-shaped keels that dig into the ground at 25mm when the car is stationary. However, once the car increases in speed, these will rise out of the ground and plane along the surface like a jet ski on water.
The wheels of the SuperSonic car are crucial when gearing up to reach high speeds, and have a range of impressive features that have been specially developed by an international consortium:
- 900mm diameter per wheel
- 95kg in weight per wheel
- 10,200 revolutions per minute
- More than 4 times faster than the wheels on an F1 car travelling at top speed
- Forged from the highest aircraft grade aluminium alloys

Setting the scene for this intense display of speed is the 12 mile track in the Hakskeen Pan. Thanks to the partnership formed between the BLOODHOUND Project, the local Mier community, and the Northern Cape Government, the location underwent the largest land clearance undertaken for any motorsport event.
16,000 tonnes of rock was removed from the 22 million square metres that comprises the Hakskeen Pan. The space means that BLOODHOUND will be able to lay 50 tracks side-by-side. This is essential since the SuperSonic car is unable to run over a piece of ground more than once.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Data from this second run will be collected by over 500 sensors across the car. The findings will then be shared with schools all over the world so that students can analyse the data.
This fulfils the BLOODHOUND Project’s other main of objective: to inspire the next generation about science by embarking on this exciting journey. The BLOODHOUND Project is more than just a test of speed; it is a project that pushes science, technology, mathematics, and engineering to their limits in a way that excites and motivates the younger generations.
