White to yellow crystals
Cadmium iodide, with the formula CdI2, is a chemical compound formed by iodine (I) and cadmium (Cd). It is sometimes referred to as cadmium di-iodide or cadmium (II) iodide. It forms odourless white to pale yellow crystals, soluble in water, as well as other solvents, including acetone, ethanol, ammonia and ether.
This compound is traditionally prepared by mixing cadmium metal (Cd) or one of its oxides, carbonates or hydroxides with hydrochloric acid. It can also be synthesised by adding cadmium and iodine at high temperatures. It’s a common ingredient in the manufacture of phosphorus; as well as electroplating, engraving, photography and lithography. Also used in lubricants and nematocides, and for cadmium electrodeposition and photoconductors.
Risk of exposure
Cadmium iodide is considered a toxic compound, harmful by inhalation or if swallowed. It’s also considered highly dangerous for the environment, where it may cause long-term and irreversible damage particularly for aquatic life. It should only be used in well-ventilated areas, and handlers must wear appropriate protective clothing, including gloves and mask. Suitable containment measures must also be in place to avoid environmental contamination, and material should be disposed of as hazardous waste. Full safety procedures can be found in the MSDS sheet available to download from the website.
