Chloroform and safety

This is an extremely dangerous compound, with fatal oral doses as low as 10ml, causing respiratory and cardiac arrest. The complete Safety Sheet can be downloaded from our website. Chloroform vapours can temporarily depress the nervous system (hence its use as an anaesthetic), resulting in dizziness, headaches and fatigue. Prolonged exposure can also affect the liver (where it’s metabolised to phosgene) and kidneys, and some people may find it irritant to the skin.

Studies in rats and mice have shown chloroform can cause miscarriages in females exposed to low doses in the air or after ingestion during pregnancy, as well as a higher risk of birth defects. Males can also be affected, and researchers found that just a few days exposure to chloroform can increase the production of abnormal sperm. The effect of chloroform in humans is less clear, but some impact can be expected.

There is also some evidence pointing at chloroform as a potential carcinogenic compound, particularly implied in some forms of liver cancer. It’s essential to follow safe procedures, including the use of protective clothing, to minimise exposure. If alternative compounds are available, its use should be considered.
