Common Industrial Uses

Ethanoic acid is an important chemical reagent in many industrial processes, including synthesis of vinyl acetate monomer and acetic anhydride. Compared to the volume used in industry, the proportion used for the production of vinegar is extremely small.

  • Vinyl acetate monomer: Representing about a third of the world’s use of ethanoic acid, synthesis of vinyl acetate monomer involves its reaction with ethylene in the presence of a palladium-based catalyst. Vinyl acetate is a common ingredient in adhesives and paints.
  • Esters of ethanoic acid: These esters are the result of the reaction between ethanoic acid and the corresponding alcohol producing, for example, ethyl, butyl, isobutyl and propyl acetate. These can be used as solvents in many products, including paints and dyes.
  • Acetic anhydride: Acetic anhydride is the product of the condensation between two ethanoic acid molecules. This is achieved in a two-step reaction, involving dehydration of one molecule of ethanoic acid to ketene at high temperatures, followed by its reaction with a second ethanoic acid. This compound is a major component in the textile industry.
  • Solvent: In addition to being used as a reagent, ethanoic acid is also a vital industrial solvent used, for example, in the manufacture of terephthalic acid.
