A glacial solution is an anhydrous highly concentrated solution of ethanoic acid, and as such must be handled with extreme care. Even though ethanoic acid is classed as a weak acid, glacial solutions are still very corrosive. Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of ethanoic acid may cause throat, nose and eye irritation, as well as skin burns. More serious cases may result in permanent damage to the lungs and upper respiratory tract.

It’s important to note that any symptoms may not appear until a few hours after the incident. To avoid such risks, appropriate clothing, including goggles and gloves must be worn at all times.
