Chemical Reactions Involving Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric acid is classed as a strong monoprotic acid, which means it dissociates almost completely in water, but each molecule can only release one proton (H ) in solution. This in turns joins a water molecule to form H3O. As a result, this compound has a high acid dissociation constant, Ka.

The other ion produced is chloride (Cl), which means hydrochloric acid can be used to synthesise chloride salts, such as sodium chloride (NaCl). In addition, of all strong monoprotic acids, hydrochloric acid is the least likely to undergo oxidation.

Despite its acidity, it’s one of the less dangerous strong acids to handle, as chloride is non-reactive and non-toxic in solution. In terms of storage, solutions of hydrochloric acid maintain their properties over time, making it an excellent reagent for many industrial processes.

Hydrochloric acid is commonly used in titration reactions, to determine the amount of bases present. Strong acids are typically preferred by most chemists as these compounds can give more accurate results. This compound is also popular in analytical reactions, due to its ability to digest samples before analysis.
