Chemical properties

Monopropylene glycol, or simply propylene glycol, is an organic double alcohol with the formula C3H8O2. It forms a colourless and odourless solution, highly soluble in water and chloroform. It contains an asymmetrical carbon, and it exists in two forms. Most commercial products available are a mixture of both forms, as pure solutions of each form individually are expensive to obtain.

Applications

Almost half of all propylene glycol produced is used in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester resins. This compound can react with isophthalic acid and maleic anhydride to produce a polymer, which subsequently undergoes crosslinking to produce thermoset plastics.

This compound is also considered safe and can be used as a humectant and preservative in food products, as well as a common ingredient in electronic cigarettes and personal care products. In the pharmaceutical industry, it’s the preferred solvent for chemicals that are insoluble in water. Finally, one last application is in antifreeze and de-icer, as it can lower the water’s freezing point. In this case, it’s becoming a more popular option than alternative products as it is classed as non-toxic.
