Method of manufacture
For laboratory use, monopropylene glycol must be synthesised from propylene oxide. The process can involve high temperatures (200-220 degree Celsius) to drive the reaction or the use of catalysts at lower temperatures (150-180 degree Celsius).
This reaction only produces about 20% propylene glycol, with other compounds including dipropylene glycol (about 2%) and small amounts of various other polypropylene glycols. This means further purification methods are essential to obtain a product which is at least 99.5%.
The toxicity associated with this compound is usually very low, are ingestion of large amounts is required to be harmful. The reason is that propylene glycol is metabolised in the body and converted mostly to acetic acid and lactic acid, both normal components of metabolism. This compound is also non-irritant to the skin and eye, although cases of conjunctivitis have been reported. In addition, there is no evidence to support a carcinogenic impact.
Interestingly, despite a low toxicity, prolonged exposure to low levels of this compound was associated with increased risk of respiratory conditions and allergies in children, including hay fever and eczema.
