How Safe is Nitric Acid?

Nitric acid is a strong and corrosive acid, as well as an oxidising agent. This means it’s essential to have in place appropriate safety procedures to handle this chemical.

The major concern for staff involves chemical burns on contact with skin. This acid is capable of hydrolysing protein and fat present in the skin, which may lead to severe burns by decomposition of living tissue.

On a less dangerous note, even low concentrations can cause yellow stains on the skin due to a reaction with keratin. Despite this localised toxicity, at the moment there is no evidence to support a mutagenic or carcinogenic effect.

Treatment and Storage

As with any other chemicals, treatment for skin burns involves washing the affected area with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. As nitric acid can have devastating effects, it’s recommended to seek medical advice. In addition, to prevent further burns, contaminated clothing or shoes must be removed and the skin underneath washed thoroughly.

In terms of storage, containers with nitric acid must be kept in a well-ventilated space, away from alkaline or organic compounds. Reactions with carbides, cyanides, turpentine and others can be explosive and self-igniting.
