Toxicity: How dangerous is Phosphoric Acid?
Phosphoric acid can be absorbed through the skin or by ingestion and inhalation. It can cause irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, as well as chemical burns and dermatitis on the skin.
The initial first aid includes washing affected area with copious amounts of soapy water. If ingested, a gastric lavage may be necessary.
Symptoms After Ingestion or Skin contact
After ingestion, phosphoric acid immediately affects mouth, throat and oesophagus in a rather painful manner.
Affected areas may turn grey and subsequently black, sometimes acquiring a wrinkled texture. Some patients may suffer nausea and vomiting a mucous-type substance. If not treated, ingestion may lead to gastric haemorrhage.
The patient will also present an intense thirst, as well as respiratory problems and a shallow breathing combined with a clammy skin and low urine excretion.
These accidents can be fatal by circulatory shock or asphyxia caused by oedema in the throat.
Even if not fatal, signs or obstruction in the respiratory tract may still develop weeks and months after exposure, if the initial condition was not treated. Scars may develop in the affected areas, including skin, eyes and throat.
