About potassium iodide

Potassium iodide is an inorganic chemical with the formula KI. Chemically, potassium iodide has an ionic behaviour in water and crystallises in a structure similar to sodium chloride. As it’s less hygroscopic than sodium iodide, it’s easier to work with. Old and impure samples tend to have a yellow discolouration as this compound is slowly oxidised to potassium carbonate and iodine. One of the most common uses is to treat thyroid problems, and it’s even in the WHO’s List of Essential Medicines.

Inorganic chemistry: Iodide has mild reducing properties and it can be easily oxidised to iodine (I2) in the presence of chlorine. This reaction is very useful to remove iodine from natural sources.

2 KI Cl2 → 2KCl I2

Potassium iodide also forms triiodide (I3) when combined with iodine. This form of iodide is soluble in water, and commonly used in redox titration reactions.

KI I2 → KI3

Organic chemistry: Potassium iodide can also be a source of iodide in organic synthesis. An example includes preparation of iodides from arendiazonium salts, or alkylation of bromides and chlorides.
