How is potassium permanganate prepared?
Usually, this compound is synthesised from manganese dioxide (MnO2) which is mixed with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and heated in the presence of potassium chlorate or potassium nitrate as a source of oxygen. This reaction produces potassium manganate (K2MnO4):
2 MnO2 4 KOH O2 → 2 K2MnO4 2 H2O
The second step involves conversion of potassium manganate into its permanganate counterpart via an electrolytic oxidation reaction.
K2MnO4 H2O → KMnO4 KOH 1/2 H2
Although not commercially viable, there are other methods to generate potassium permanganate. One of them involves oxidation of potassium manganate with chlorine (reaction 1) or via a disproportionation reaction in acidic conditions (reaction 2). After the reaction, potassium permanganate can be isolated after it crystallises.
Reaction 1 2 K2MnO4 Cl2 → 2 KMnO4 2 KCl
Reaction 2 3 K2MnO4 4 HCl → 2 KMnO4 MnO2 2 H2O 4 KCl
How to test for the presence of potassium permanganate
Tests to identify the presence of potassium permanganate rely on the strong purple colours produced by its salts in the presence of sodium bismuthate (NaBiO3) and lead dioxide (PbO2). These strong oxidant reagents can convert manganese ions (Mn2 ) into permanganate salts, which can then be detected.
