How is sodium thiosulphate used in analytical chemistry?

The most important use derives from the fact that thiosulphate anion can react with iodine, generating iodine and tetrathionate. Given that pentahydrate forms of sodium thiosulphate have an excellent shelf-life, this compound is commonly used as a titrant in iodometry.

This compound can also be used to measure the oxygen content in aqueous solutions, via a series of reactions in a process known as the Winkler test for dissolved oxygen. In addition, it’s also used to estimate the concentrations of some compounds dissolved in solution, including chlorine in commercial bleaches, for example.

Sodium thiosulphate can also be used to detect the presence of aluminium, as it forms a white precipitate in its presence

A final way of using sodium thiosulphate in analytical chemistry involves its alkylation to generate S-alkylsulphonates, commonly called Bunte salts. This reaction can be used to synthesis thioglycolic acid, in a two-step process:

ClCH2CO2H Na2S2O3 → Na[O3S2CH2CO2H] NaCl

Na[O3S2CH2CO2H] H2O → HSCH2CO2H NaHSO4
