Acid-Base Properties of Sulphuric Acid

As a strong acid, sulphuric acid is able to react with most bases, to produce the corresponding sulphate.

For example, mixing sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and copper oxide (CuO) results in the formation of copper sulphate (CuSO4), commonly used as a fungicide and electronics:

CuO + H2SO4 → CuSO4 + H2

This acid can also be used to remove weaker acids from their salts. For example, reaction with sodium acetate (CH3COONa) can produce acetic acid (CH3COOH) and sodium bisulphate (NaHSO4, reaction 1), and mixing potassium nitrate (KNO3) and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) generates nitric acid (HNO3) and potassium bisulphate (KHSO4, reaction 2):

Reaction 1: H2SO4 + CH3COONa → NaHSO4 + CH3COOH

Reaction 2: H2SO4 +KNO3 → KHSO4 + HNO3

When combined with nitric acid, sulphuric acid can act both as an acid and as a dehydrating agent, to produce NO2 (nitronium ion).

This is characteristic of nitration reactions and is very important in organic chemistry, such as esterification and dehydration reactions.

In the presence of superacids, sulphuric acid can also act as a base and itself be protonated, forming H3SO4 ion. This is difficult to control, however, as sulphuric acid undergoes self-ionisation easily to produce H3O ions, preventing the conversion of H2SO4 to H3SO4.
