Where Do You Find sulphuric acid?
It’s impossible to find anhydrous sulphuric acid, as this acid has a great affinity to water and dissolves easily. One of the most common forms found naturally is in acid rain, formed by oxidation of sulphurous acid in the atmosphere. Sulphurous acid is a by-product of burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil.
Sulphuric acid is also naturally formed via oxidation of sulphide minerals, including iron sulphide. The result is a highly acidic water, which is capable of dissolving metals in sulphide ores which may release toxic compounds into water streams.
However, planet Earth is not the only one where this acid can be found. Sulphuric acid is also present in the upper atmosphere in Venus, originating via the Sun’s action on carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and water. Ultraviolet light can convert carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide and oxygen. As this highly reactive oxygen mixes with sulphur dioxide, it produces sulphur trioxide, which can then combine with water and generate sulphuric acid.
In addition, researchers speculate that Jupiter’s moon, Europa, may also contain sulphuric acid. In this case, this acid would cause an important freezing-point depression in the water, lowering the melting to -63 degree Celsius (210K) and making the existence of fluids under the icy crust significantly more likely.
