How is Sulphuric Acid Produced?

There are two available methods to produce sulphuric acid: via the conventional contact process or the wet sulphuric acid process.

Contact Process

This multi-step process starts with the oxidation of sulphur to produce sulphur dioxide (reaction 1), which is then oxidised to sulphur trioxide in the presence of a vanadium oxide catalyst (reaction 2).

The sulphur trioxide is subsequently absorbed in a high concentration solution of sulphuric acid to form H2S2O7 (reaction 3), commonly called fuming sulphuric acid. This solution is finally diluted with water to generate sulphuric acid (reaction 4):

Reaction 1 – SO2 → SO2

Reaction 2 – 2SO2 + O2 → 2SO3

Reaction 3 – H2SO4 + SO3 → H2S2O7

Reaction 4 – H2S2O7 + H2O → 2H2SO4

Wet Process

This also multi-step method starts in a similar way, with oxidation of sulphur to generate sulphur dioxide (reaction 1) or alternatively, hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is burnt to produce sulphur dioxide gas (reaction 2).

Sulphur dioxide is subsequently oxidised to sulphur trioxide with a vanadium oxide as catalyst (reaction 3) which is then hydrated to produce sulphuric acid:

Reaction 1 – SO2 → SO2

Reaction 2 – 2H2S + 3O2 → 2H2O + 2SO2

Reaction 3 – 2SO2 + O2 → 2SO3

Reaction 4 – SO3 + H2O → H2SO4
