Iron(III) chloride and yellow
Also called ferric chloride, iron(III) chloride is a chemical used in many industrial and other processes, including to make a primary colour solution for the colour yellow. In solid state, iron chloride crystals vary in colour depending on the viewing angle. With reflected light, the crystals look dark green, but with transmitted light they look red-purple.
When added to water, iron chloride undergoes hydrolysis and releases heat in an exothermic reaction. In addition to being used as a primary colour solution, this compound is also used in many other applications:
Flocculant in sewage treatment
Enchant in copper-based metals in printed circuit boards
Catalyst in the reaction of ethylene with chlorine
Catalyst in the chlorination of aromatic compounds
Ferric chloride test
Used to precipitate phosphate in water treatment
Used in welding to etch the metal, to produce a contrasting effect
Etching of photogravure painting in photos and fine art prints
Etching cylinders used in the printing industry
Used to test over cropping of pet’s claws, especially if bleeding
Used in the synthesis of ferrocene
used in pottery to colour pieces shades of brown and orange
Used to test resistance to corrosion of stainless steel and other alloys
Used to synthesis primary amines
